Have you been reading about post modernity? I’ve been reading about it a lot lately. I know that people have been discussing this for years, but it sounded like a PhD level discussion – rather dry and not very practical.
I was wrong. Suddenly, fascinating articles and books on the cultural revolution of post modernity are coming my way. The world is changing and I find myself very comfortable with post modernity. I’d like to know how you feel about it.
Anthony B. Robinson, author, church consultant, and motivational speaker describes the contrast between modernity and post modernity clearly:
‘I describe modernity in terms of a “Big Five” of hallmark values: reason, optimism, universality, objectivity, and the “grand story.” Modernity held that reason and rational thought are the primary human faculties and the keys to gaining control over life and ridding the world of pernicious superstitions (which is the way many moderns saw religion). By contrast, post-moderns tend to think we’ve drunk too heavily at the wells of reason. They are open to intuition, emotional intelligence, embodied knowledge and mystery. Where moderns wanted their preachers to explain mystery, post-moderns want to experience mystery.’ [Anthony B. Robinson, “It’s a Whole New World” An Online Course on Church and Culture in a New Time]
What does “post modernity” mean to you? Let me know!

Robinson has also written many books, but two are particularly important in this discussion: Changing the Conversation: A Third Way for Congregations, ISBN-13:9780802807595, 9/28/08 and Transforming Congregational Culture, ISBN-13:9780802805188, 1/28/03.
